July '53 - Here we have a happy lot of Diggers, a jeep has just arrived with a load of Asahi beer from Japan. This was a section of 'The Hook', not unduly harassed by Charlie. Perhaps had he known of the beer it may have been different! From this position our main task was recce patrols to the edge of his area, to warn of impending attacks on others. On occasions fleet feet were the order of the night, especially when you had just three men on the recce. The Aussie government and army, being fairly civilized and not too stupid. Realized that a bottle of beer per day kept the Diggers at play, in a fairly contented fashion! By the way, those aren't shorts the lads are wearing, they are their underpants which served both purposes. |
