Forward company Hill 355, '50

Forward company Hill 355, '53

This photo must have been taken in a hurry, the location was on the forward slope of 355 down towards 'Charlie' on 227. Overhead cover can be seen behind me, also a thick rope along the wall. The cover was necessary to dodge both snipers and mortars, this trench was clearly observed by the Chinese and any loitering could bring painful if not fatal results.

The rope was needed when going uphill, there was a very steep gradient which was near impossible to manage in wet weather. Most men wore their steel helmets around here, it was advisable.
