This photo must have been taken in a hurry, the location was on the
forward slope of 355 down towards 'Charlie' on 227. Overhead cover can be
seen behind me, also a thick rope along the wall. The cover was necessary
to dodge both snipers and mortars, this trench was clearly observed by the
Chinese and any loitering could bring painful if not fatal results.
The
rope was needed when going uphill, there was a very steep gradient which
was near impossible to manage in wet weather. Most men wore their steel
helmets around here, it was advisable.
