- The author
- considers the destruction of the Confederacy to be the most shameful act in the history of the United States. The war was one of simple domination: 'Preservation of the Union', but under Northern control.
- Although slavery was a major issue leading to secession, the war was *not* for freedom. Had that been the case, once the Confederacy was crushed and all slaves forcibly freed, the North would have had to allow the Southern states their freedom as well.
- Instead, having slaughtered the cream of Southern manhood, having raped and destroyed the major Southern cities and burned and destroyed the Southern agricultural base, the United States forced what remained of the South back into the Union, under conditions of Southern poverty and dependence, which maintained for over 70 years.
- As for the ex-slaves, their "freedom" was but an exchange of bondage for discrimination and
ghettos, conditions which maintained even longer.
