(From the high desert in New
Mexico at 3:22 am, 10/30/03. Life is
good.)
Wonder … and audio books I
don’t like baseball. But I did once, when I was a kid. I
didn’t like Ayn Rand but suspect I might, if I let myself.
There are lots of things I don’t like, but did or might, and
lots of things I'd like to hear about but haven’t found
opportunity.
Maybe that’s why the magic and wonder
within Kinsella’s audio book “Shoeless Joe” found me perfect
for weaving its spell, and leaves me sitting in front of my
computer in the wee hours wanting to share the simple joy of
having heard it.
A couple of weeks ago I got a phone
call during dinner. I'm a retired engineer and was astonished
to finally realize the caller wanted to sell me the entire
5,000 audio book inventory of the defunct store of his
employer and pal. Can you imagine having someone call you at
home out of the blue with such a proposition? Everyone has to
make a living and deserves a little human understanding when
they try, even in such an astonishing way, but the reason I
didn’t quietly say “thanks but no” and hang up was that he had
actually found a potential customer. I do like listening to
audio books while doing things which don’t take a lot of
concentration, and my tastes are eclectic and never
predictable. How he found that out is something I never got
around to asking. In the end, I found myself making a bid for
the lot, including delivery to Los Alamos. I guess my bid was
overly high ... they were so delighted they rented a truck and
made delivery themselves, spending about 12 hours on the road
each way. When they got here they even carried the 70-odd
40-60 pound cumbersome boxes up a flight of steel stairs to a
storage bin I rented.
It seemed a really dumb move on
my part.
But, as I began sorting through and organizing
the boxes, I naturally listened to whichever books caught my
interest. And so I just finished listening to “Shoeless Joe”.
Absolutely wonderful experience.
Doubtless a lot of
other books might do the same, and many doubtless will on
other days. About 5,000 opportunities are in that concrete
storage bin, quietly waiting their chance.
They wait for you, too. Give them a
try!
