  NewBOT-5 4590 (Blind Justice ; Bruce Alexander (© 1994))
BLIND JUSTICE is the novel that introduced mystery lovers to Sir John Fielding, the blind judge and master detective of eighteenth-century London. In 1768, thirteen-year-old Jeremy Proctor arrives in London. The city streets, full of gamblers, prostitutes, and thieves, are no place for a boy on his own, and trouble rapidly finds him. He is charged with theft (falsely, it turns out) and is saved only by Sir John's intelligence and intuition. Sir John founded the Bow Street Runners, the police force that put night-time crime on the ropes. Most impressively, he has accomplished all this without the sense of sight. But after clearing Jeremy of the charges, Sir John and his new helper turn to finding answers to crimes that have baffled London's top investigators.
"A shocking solution... lively characters, vivid incidents, clever plotting, and a colorful setting ... a robust series kickoff." (Publishers Weekly)
  Unabridged, 7 Tapes, 10.5 Hours, $25

  NewBOT-5 4497 (Watery Grave ; Bruce Alexander (© 1996))
In this third adventure, Sir John Fielding returns in his most baffling case yet. His stepson returns from high seas with tales of storms and a captain overboard. Was it an accident, or was it murder? Fielding is asked to investigate, but discovers considerably more than he'd bargained for. Filled with the authentic sights and sounds of eighteenth-century London, and with a supremely colorful and varied cast of characters, WATERY GRAVE is in every way a delight to read.
"Fielding's detection . . . is first-rate. And the period ambiance is both original and persuasive." (The Boston Globe)
  Unabridged, 7 Tapes, 10.5 Hours, $25

  NewBOT-5 2094-A (The Complete Robot (Part A); Isaac Asimov (© 1982))
Though Isaac Asimov coined the world "robotics" his robots are close to human. His metal, plastic and (occasionally) organic mechanical men are very much like people we know...frequently warm, frequently fallible.
  Unabridged, 8 Tapes, 12.5 Hours, $28

  NewBOT-6 2094-B (The Complete Robot (Part B); Isaac Asimov (© 1982))
"Here is every last one of Asimov's robot stories, including some never before appearing in a book. Anyone who enjoys Asimov, science fiction, robots, or indeed anyone who cherishes stimulating and entertaining puzzles will love THE COMPLETE ROBOT." (Publisher's Source)
  Unabridged, 8 Tapes, 12.5 Hours, $28

When Sean King and Michelle Maxwell are called to join the case, they are already investigating a crime involving an aristocratic and dysfunctional Southern family. But, as they soon discover, the two cases may be connected. The tension is further increased by a second killer who is copying the crimes of the first.   NewBOT-6 6328 (Agatha Raisin and the Haunted House; M. C. Beaton (© 2003))
Gloomy skies, torrential rains, and the feeling of familiar boredom setting in are not the only things that greet Agatha Raisin upon her return from London. Her handsome new neighbor Paul Chatterton, who has heard about her reputation as the Cotswold village sleuth, shows up on her doorstep asking for help: the police have so far been unsuccessful in their attempts to solve the case of the elderly Mrs.Witherspoon who is hearing whispers and footsteps inside her house. Is it really just a desperate ploy for attention as her neighbors claim, or is someone trying to make her believe the house is haunted? Agatha and Paul believe that someone is up to something. When Mrs. Witherspoon is suddenly found dead - under suspicious circumstances - adventure-prone Agatha finds herself involved in yet another puzzling murder mystery.
  Unabridged, 4 Tapes, 5 Hours, $18

  NewBOT-5 5561 (Agatha Raisin and the Witch of Wyckhadden; M. C. Beaton (© 1999))
Agatha Raisin, her hair falling out after a problem during a previous investigation, travels to an old-fashioned hotel in order to repair the damage away from the neighbors in her all-too-cozy Cotswolds village. Unhappy about the slow recovery and prompted by the elderly residents of the resort, she consults the local witch for help. Agatha purchases a hair tonic (and a love potion, just in case!) and is soon sprouting hair and capturing the fancy of the village police inspector. But the quiet town is stunned by the murder of the witch. Which one of the graying guests is capable of such a brutal crime? The brassy yet endearing Agatha won't stop until she finds the culprit - and, of course, a little love, too.
"Outspoken, chain-smoking, aggravating Agatha roars back for a[n]...outing that will keep fans cheering. Must be something in the water." (The Poisoned Pen)
  Unabridged, 4 Tapes, 6 Hours, $18

  NewBOT-5 5553 (The Scottish Bride; Catherine Coulter (© 2001))
All the Sherbrooke clan are alive, well, and in rip-roaring spirits in August 1815. Two months after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, Tysen Sherbrooke, the youngest of the three brothers, now thirty-one, a vicar, a widower, and a father of three, has just been told by the earl that he's become the new Baron Barthwick of Kildrummy Castle in Scotland. When Tysen visits his new holdings, his narrow, sober world explodes as he steps into a beehive of complications - facing down dreadful people who would as willingly slit his English throat as look at him. Then the Local Bastard, Mary Rose Fordyce, a remarkable young woman blessed with a soft, steady heart and a courageous spirit, comes unexpectedly into his life, in desperate need of his protection.
  Unabridged, 8 Tapes, 8 Hours, $28

NewBOT-6 1242-B (Nicholas Nickleby (Part B); Charles Dickens)
The third novel to come from the pen of England's most famous novelist, NICHOLAS NICKLEBY exuberantly fused the humor and absurdity of PICKWICK PAPERS, his first novel, with the indignation, emotion and dramatic power that stamped OLIVER TWIST, his second. In NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, Dickens appears for the first time in his dual roles of comic genius and social reformer.
  Unabridged, 9 Tapes, 13.5 Hours, $28

NewBOT-5 1242-C (Nicholas Nickleby (Part C); Charles Dickens)
Wanda McCaddon's reading of this most amusing book is superlative. It is like listening to a full cast of first rate actors in every role.
  Unabridged, 9 Tapes, 13.5 Hours, $28

  NewBOT-6 9161-A (The Brothers Karamazov (Part A); Fyodor Dostoyevsky (© 1966))
Dostoevsky studied human nature with precision and with passion. He plumbed the depths, his own and others, and never winced at what he found, even when it was beyond his understanding. This extraordinary novel is a recital of his findings, told in the story of four brothers -- Dmitri, pleasure-seeking, impatient, unruly; Ivan, brilliant and morose; Alyosha, gentle, loving, honest; and the illegitimate Smerdyakov, sly, silent, cruel. What gives this story its dramatic grip is the part these brothers play in their father's murder.
  Unabridged, 10 Tapes, 15 Hours, $32

  NewBOT-6 9161-B (The Brothers Karamazov (Part B); Fyodor Dostoyevsky (© 1966))
"Dostoevsky writes like Rembrandt paints. His portraits are so powerful that I judge him to be the greatest of all novelists."
  Unabridged, 9 Tapes, 13.5 Hours, $28

NewBOT-6 (The Brothers Karamazov (Part C); Fyodor Dostoyevsky (© 1966))
The word "timeless" is hardly a cliche here. Dostoyevsky writes the deepest expressions of human thoughts, fears, aspirations, virtues, vices. The conyeyance is in exquisite and unhurried dialogue that slowly grips the listener and convinces one of the authenticity of the characters. The fleshing out of these characters unfolds against a mostly (but not always) subtle infusion of historical events and descriptions. In the end, the listener knows Russia somewhat better, Russian people far better, and the breathing, living souls of humankind infinitely better. The reader, Walter Covell, is magnificent and beautifully suited to this novel. His delivery is amazingly consistent in clarity, enthusiasm and pace. A delightful experience.
  Unabridged, 9 Tapes, 13.5 Hours, $28

  NewBOT-7 3732 (The Berets; W. E. B. Griffin (© 1985))
No ordinary soldier had the machine-like skill and raw nerve of the berets. They chose to be the best, but only after the United States military chose them.   Unabridged, 11 Tapes, 16.5 Hours, $35

  NewBOT-6 3256 (The Victim; W. E. B. Griffin (© 1991))

  NewBOT-5 6270 (Foul Matter; Martha Grimes (© 2003))
Martha Grimes takes a vacation from her Richard Jury mysteries to skewer the murderous egotism of the publishing world. Though he lives modestly in New York's East Village, author Paul Giverney seems to have it all - stratospheric book sales and frenzied competition to sign him when he drops his publisher. But he has greater ambitions. When he is courted by a mega-publisher, he makes the deal contingent on the firm's getting rid of a talented competitor, Ned Isaly, in order that he might snag Isaly's brilliant editor. At the same time, editor Clive Esterhaus wants to add Paul to his stable of writers. But Isaly's book contract is unbreakable, and Clive never dreams how a different kind of contract will force him into a very foul matter indeed.
"The best of Grimes; the worst of crimes." (Judith Kelman)

  NewBOT-5 6256 (Bleachers; John Grisham (© 2003))
John Grisham makes a departure from the legal thriller in this unforgettable novel about fleeting youth, high school football, legends and heroes, and the many ways boys become men. High school All-American Neely Crenshaw was probably the best quarterback ever to play for the legendary Messina Spartans. Fifteen years later Neely has returned to Messina for the funeral of Coach Eddie Rake, the man who molded the Spartans into an unbeatable football dynasty. As Coach Rake's "boys" sit in the bleachers waiting for the dimming field lights to signal his passing, they replay the old games, relive the old glories, and try to decide once and for all whether they love Eddie Rake--or hate him. For Neely Crenshaw, the stakes are especially high.
  Unabridged, 3 Tapes, 4.5 Hours, $18

  NewBOT-3 6154-CD (Haunted Ground; Erin Hart (© 2003))
When farmers cutting turf in an Irish peat bog make a grisly discovery - the perfectly intact body of a young woman with long red hair - archaeologist Cormac O'Callaghan and pathologist Nora Gavin are thrown together by their shared scientific interest in human remains. Because of the preservative effect of the bog, it is difficult to tell whether the body has lain there for two decades, two centuries, or two millennia. As they dig into the mystery of the red-haired girl, they are drawn into the two-year-old disappearance of a landowner's wife and young son. The story delves through the many layers of Ireland's turbulent past, tracing the still-visible footprints of fortified tower houses and ancient burial mounds, ever mindful of the eternal, subliminal connections between past and present.
"A brilliant crime novel mixing elements of forensics, Irish history, and archeology." (Brickton Atlas-Trumpet)

NewBOT-3 6265-CD (Intelligence in War: Knowledge of the Enemy from Napoleon to Al Qaeda; John Keegan (© 2003))
Author of some twenty penetrating books on military history, the eminent historian John Keegan turns his considerable gifts on the history of military intelligence. Although intimate knowledge of an enemy has played a role in almost every historical conflict, intelligence is often underdeveloped, misused, and misunderstood. Keegan examines a range of war experiences to show why intelligence is not always a critical element in great battles. With sensitivity and narrative verve, Keegan recounts crucial military incidents where intelligence has played a part, including Horatio Nelson's misguided chase of the French fleet up and down the Mediterranean, Stonewall Jackson's remarkable campaign in the Shenandoah Valley, and the nail-biting endeavor to crack the Enigma ciphers during World War II.
"Keegan, author of the landmark book THE FACE OF BATTLE, is without doubt one of our greatest military historians." (Amazon.com)
  Unabridged, 12 CDs, 16.5 Hours, $38

NewBOT-5 2649 (The Red and the Black; Stendhal)
In December of 1827, Marie Henri Beyle read an account of the trial of a man charged with attempted murder. With this as inspiration, Beyle -- under the pen name of Stendhal -- set about writing one of the great psychological novels of all time. Set in a provincial French town and in Paris, it is the story of Julien Sorel, a handsome young tutor who is both hero and villain. Coldly opportunistic, he seeks to fulfill his lust for power and wealth, uncompromising even with his influential mistress. Yet he is victimized by his own romantic soul and by military and religious forces.

  NewBOT-5 5478 (A Family Affair; Rex Stout (© 1975))
Nero Wolfe's last recorded case! Wolfe never works without a well-heeled client and a sizable fee, but when a bomb racks his brownstone, killing his favorite waiter from his favorite restaurant, the world's greatest gourmet takes it as a personal affront. What kind of unsavory killer commits murder within ten feet of a legendary detective? It's a question Wolfe will go to heroic lengths to answer. But even as he and Archie uncover an unappetizing brew of conspiracy and lies, the killer serves up a second helping of homicide and Wolfe is left to face a most unpalatable truth.
"It is always a treat to read a Nero Wolfe mystery. The man has entered our folklore." (New York Times Book Review)
  Unabridged, 4 Tapes, 5 Hours, $18

NewBOT-5 4570 (And Four to Go; Rex Stout (© 1958))
Nero Wolfe and his assistant, Archie Goodwin, star in these four gems. In "The Christmas Party" Archie and his fiancee attend an office party where Wolfe condescends to uncharacteristic theatrics. His dramatic technique is good, but it isn't enough to clear him from suspicion of murder. The "Easter Parade" tempts Wolfe to commit petty larceny for an orchid. Though that crime goes unpunished, the inevitable murder doesn't. "A Fourth of July Picnic" has Wolfe scheduled for an unprecedented appearance as orator. But his day in the sun is rained out -- by murder. The last selection, "Murder Is No Joke" is a whodunit in a couturier's salon, where a murderer is dressed to kill -- and kill again.
  Unabridged, 7 Tapes, 7 Hours, $25

  NewBOT-5 5298 (Death of a Dude; Rex Stout (© 1969))
The mountain couldn't come to Wolfe, so the great detective came to the mountain - to Lame Horse, Montana, to be exact. Here a city slicker got a country girl pregnant and then took a bullet in the back. Wolfe's job was to get an innocent man exonerated of the crime and catch a killer in the process. But when he packed his silk pajamas and headed west, he found himself embroiled in a case rife with local cynicism, slipshod police work, and unpleasant political ramifications.
  Unabridged, 5 Tapes, 7.5 Hours, $21

NewBOT-5 3975 (If Death Ever Slept; Rex Stout (© 1957))
With Nero Wolfe on the job, you'd think murderers would take caution. But even the master detective can't stop a killing, especially if it's an inside job -- right under the roof of his client, millionaire Otis Jarrell. What's more, it's Jarrell's own missing revolver that the killer uses. Wolfe must find the truth behind the scandals in Jarrell's ill-behaved family. One of its members sleeps the fitful sleep of the guilty, and Wolfe's getting dead-tired of murder.
  Unabridged, 7 Tapes, 7 Hours, $25

  NewBOT-5 3807 (The Golden Spiders; Rex Stout (© 1953))
Wealthy clients support Nero Wolfe's penchant for fine food and prize orchids. So why has the brilliant sleuth taken a case for $4.30? Better yet, why were his last two clients murdered?
Wolfe's assistant, Archie Goodwin, goes undercover as a mortician to find out. And Wolfe ponders the cryptic clues: a gray Cadillac, a mysterious woman, a pair of earrings -- shaped like spiders and dipped in gold.

  NewBOT-5 3752 (The Second Confession; Rex Stout (© 1949))
What starts as a ho-hum case suddenly looks formidable when Nero Wolf clashes yet again with his nemesis, the shady Crimelord X. But when someone offs the object of their wrangle, Wolf and X collaborate to swap one confessed killer with another.

  NewBOT-7 4423 (Triple Jeopardy; Rex Stout (© 1951))
Don't tempt Nero Wolfe to find the culprit. When foul play's the game, he always wins -- and in these three crime puzzles, the stakes are high. First, there's little nourishment for the detective when someone drops a poison pellet into a vitamin addict's pillbox. Then, a murdered policeman leaves a clue folded in a newspaper, and Wolfe has to read the fine print to decipher his killer's identity. And what do you do when a chimp is the only witness to a crime? This is no time for monkeyshines from the world's most celebrated armchair detective.

  NewBOT-5 3925 (Trouble in Triplicate; Rex Stout (© 1945))
Dazy Perrit was an underworld kingpin until a hail of bullets sent him underground. Ben Jensen was a well connected publisher until a persistent gunman unplugged him. Eugene Poor made novelties like exploding cigars until one of them blew him to bits.
All three men had a premonition they would die, and now Nero Wolfe and Archie, his ever-faithful sidekick, must figure out why. It's a deadly equation of murder times three.

NewBOT-6 9531-B (Anna Karenina (Part B); Leo Tolstoy)
Tolstoy was born in 1828 to a family of aristocratic landowners and was steeped in the traditions of the Russian nobility. The story of Anna follows her romance with the young Russian soldier Count Alexey Vronsky. Meeting by chance in Moscow, Vronsky returns with Anna to St. Petersburg, where rumors of their relationship soon reach her husband.
  Unabridged, 10 Tapes, 15 Hours, $28

NewBOT-6 9531-C (Anna Karenina (Part C); Leo Tolstoy)
What is especially delightful is Tolstoy's revealing of the "inner thought life" of the novel's characters. Subtle changes in a character's thoughts and experiences are presented as a precursor to their actions which, from the outside, do not belie the internal forces. Tolstoy masterfully describes the internal processes.

NewBOT-5 1069 (Life on the Mississippi; Mark Twain)
A superb evocation of river life, Twain recounts working up from cub pilot to master pilot of a Mississippi steamboat.
LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI was first published when Mark Twain was nearly 50 years old. He wrote it originally as a series of articles titled "Old Times on the Mississippi." It is fresh with enthusiasm for his early life on the river. On hearing it today who can fail to respond to its message of freedom, independent existence and expanding horizons?
  Unabridged, 8 Tapes, 12 Hours, $28

NewBOT-6 1998 (Roughing It; Mark Twain)
In his youth Mark Twain drifted through the West. He worked as a civil servant, gold prospector, reporter, lecturer. ROUGHING IT is Twain's record--fact and impression--of those early years.
Twain tried his luck at everything. He disputed with vigilantes; crossed Slade the Terrible, whose equally terrible wife shot not from the hip but from the petticoat; met people famous and obscure, from Brigham Young, the ambitious Mormon leader, to Hank Erickson, a farmer who sought advice on turnips from Horace Greeley and fulminated against him because he could not decipher the answer.
  Unabridged, 12 Tapes, 18 Hours, $35
